Dit blijkt uit opgravingen in de Aarlese Heide ten zuiden van het Wilhelminakanaal. Best hoorde aanvankelijk tot de gemeente Oirschot en bestond uit de buurtschappen Naastenbest en Verrenbest. Daarnaast waren er de buurtschappen Aarle en De Vleut, die tot heden een landelijk karakter hebben behouden.
